There are always those things of which people know they should be doing but just don’t get around to. Things like neglecting the use of sunscreen or fixing that dripping sink can cause more damage the longer it is ignored. Futon covers are also one of those things which people should be using but often delay purchasing. On average, a quality futon mattress can last for 10 years or more. However, if a futon cover is not an integrated part of the futon system, you can expect to lose half of the regular lifespan.

Futon mattresses are typically composed of cotton and a variety of foams which are relatively absorptive. It is typical for a mattress to lose it’s functionality from moisture build up leading to mold and/or mildew. Once a futon has become infested with mold or mildew, it needs to be thrown away. Liquids are not only caused from spilling on the mattress either. Night time sweating, periodic vomit, bed wetting, or other human excretions can continue to add to either the moisture level or contamination of the mattress. Mattress compaction is also a problem the stems in part from moisture build up. Incremental moisture (from sweating for example) may not cause mildew, however mattress compaction is accelerated. This is the sagging which often means replacement is necessary and very little can be done to revive the mattress. Despite the potential for moisture problems, futon mattresses are really a great value. If a proper futon cover is employed, the moisture issue becomes an unlikely issue. Futon covers will typically cost between $25-$75. Make sure the futon cover you buy is of high enough quality that you don’t feel like you are sleeping on a garbage bag. Some covers will only guard against minor spills, so you will want to make sure that is adequate.

If you have a futon sofa in your living room, there are also many different colors and designs of covers that allow blending of your sofa into the decor. On the other hand, if you are using it solely for a bedroom mattress, you can avoid paying for the additional colors and designs as there are plain covers that can be bought which will save you a few dollars.
